About Project Eye-To-Eye

Launching a New Chapter of Project Eye-to-Eye at SI

This year students at SI with LD/ADHD can choose to be a part of a co-curricular club led by Ms. Sarah Merrell. Our focus is mentoring younger LD/ADHD students (who do not attend SI) by mentoring them through their school experience. Our club will be a Bay Area Chapter of the national organization Project Eye-to-Eye. Two of the seniors I work with, Haley Kaplan and Lizz Brooks, have worked hard to bring this club to fruition. This summer they completed the training program; Organizing Institute for Project Eye-to-Eye, at Brown University in Rhode Island. Haley and Lizz acquired invaluable community organizing skills and learned how to create SI’s chapter. I am very proud of them.

Details of Project Eye-to-Eye

This program involves matching SI students who have LD/ADHD (Sarah Merrell’s Caseload) with elementary school students who also have LD/ADHD. The school that we will be paired with is Saint Vincent De Paul. A mentoring partnership is arranged between the SI student and the SVDP student. We will meet eight times a semester at SVDP; by working on various art projects we hope to create an environment which promotes discussion, increases self esteem, and generates lifelong self-advocacy skills. The time commitment is a maximum of 2hrs a week not including one training day on September, 20th. Because this organization is a nonprofit you can also receive service hours (*The Christian Service Office will award a gift of hours to each student involved in the Club; hours will be determined on an individual basis). This is truly a great opportunity to learn about yourself, help younger kids, and get involved in the community.
